Guidance on how to access NHS Costing Framework.

NHS England Knowledge and Library Services team provides advice and access to the NHS Costing Framework, developed by Larraine Cooper of the Larian Consultancy, licensed for use by NHS Knowledge and Library Specialists.

There are 3 recommended stages to costing NHS Knowledge and Library services.

General costing principles

We recommend that if you are not familiar with the principles of costing you consider viewing the recorded webinar which provides an overview of the principles used in the processes.

Contact Knowledge for Healthcare (KfH) England for the script in an accessible format.

This introductory video podcast, open to all interested parties, provides a background to costing. This is also available on the NHS Knowledge for Healthcare Futures workspace.

Calculating the hourly rate of KLS staff

To note that formerly we made available a series of templates and documents, supported by a training session, to guide colleagues in calculating the bespoke costs of their individual staff members based on a series of factors.

From 2023, and following advice from a Health Economist, we are recommending that colleagues use the Unit Costs of Health and Social Care from the Personal Social Services Research Unit (PSSRU) at the University of Kent.

For consistency we recommend the use of the Hospital Based Scientific and Technical Staff costs found in section 11.1.2 (page 94) and transcribed into this document.

Process costing

The process costing webinar is available as a recorded webinar with transcript for colleagues to view at a convenient time removing the need to book on a training session.

Access to the NHS Costing Toolkit

The NHS Costing Toolkit continues to be available for NHS knowledge and library staff who have undertaken the above training.

If you have viewed the Process Costing session please complete the form to gain access to the toolkit.
