Learning Academy Library
Resources to support knowledge and library staff in their professional interests and development, wherever they are based within the NHS in England and whatever stage in their career.
The library contains books, ebooks and journals, with resources held in different locations but accessible to everyone.
Physical book stock
Two collections of books, one hosted by East Crawley Hospital on behalf of KSS, and one hosted by The Rotherham Hospital library on behalf of the North, are available for loan to knowledge and library staff based in other regions.
Alternatively, use the OPAC advanced search option, selecting Library staff professional development collection from the Collections tab and searching using subject or keyword.
How to borrow from each physical collection
KSS collection
Identify what you wish to borrow, then request via your Trust library service (not from your personal email) request it from Surrey and Sussex Healthcare's Crawley Hospital Library on [email protected].
The KLS team will issue it to your library service and post it out. Knowledge and library staff from KSS libraries should request books in the usual way through your regional LMS.
Return the book via your library service to the postal address for Crawley Hospital Library listed in HSLID.
Northern collection
Identify what you wish to borrow, then request via your Trust library service (not from your personal email) request it from Rotherham Foundation Trust Library and Knowledge Service on
[email protected].
They will issue it to your library service and post it out. Knowledge and library staff from YorCat libraries should request books in the usual way through your regional LMS.
Return the book via your library service to the postal address for Rotherham Foundation Trust Library listed in HLISD.
Books will generally be loaned for four weeks, with up to two renewals upon request by the loaning library.
Watch out for and keep the book wrapper, as this will have details you need to give feedback and submit a book review.
National ebook collection
The Rotherham Hospital library is hosting the national ebook collection. Access is available to all knowledge and library staff in England with an NHS OpenAthens account, via the YorCat catalogue https://yorcat.koha-ptfs.co.uk/
You can browse the collection or use the Advanced search to combine any keywords with these parameters:
- item type = E-book
- collection = Library staff professional development collection
Additionally for knowledge and library staff in the North, there is a small collection of ebooks hosted by The Rotherham Hospital Library, which we have been unable to release nationally due to legacy licencing issues. These can be identified in the YorCat catalogue advanced search with the following parameters:
- item type = E-book
- collection = Library staff professional development collection north
This collection is not available using NHS OpenAthens. To request access to these titles, knowledge and library staff in the North should contact the Rotherham Foundation Trust Library and Knowledge Service at [email protected].
Archive journal collection
This journal collection is held at Salford Royal, part of the Northern Care Alliance. To view the list of journals, search the Union List of Journals by holding library. Select Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust – HCLU Staff Library (Salford).

New stock suggestions
The Learning Academy Library welcomes suggestions for new purchases. Please contact the Learning Academy Library working group on [email protected] if you have a title to suggest.
Book reviews
If you have used a book in the collection and found it valuable, please shout about it!
Send your book review to the Learning Academy Library working group and it will be added to the national blog.
Please include what you found valuable and maybe what you did as a consequence, it will inspire others to use the collection and share the learning.
For Trainers
If you deliver training to NHS knowledge and library staff in England, please think about creating a reading list from the Learning Academy Library to support your course attendees.
